Chapter Thirteen

The morning dawned bright, clear, and warm, and they dressed in new coordinating swimsuits, Emily in a one piece, and Edie in a modest two-piece, and then pulled on the matching terry cloth cover-ups. “I like our dresses,” Emily said.

“I do too. Gina has good taste in clothes.” Edie leaned into the mirror to apply a little bit of waterproof mascara to disguise the sleepless night she’d spent.

Emily nodded. “She always dresses pretty.”

“She’s a clothes horse,” Edie said, standing back and brushing out her hair.

“That’s silly, she’s not a horse.”

Edie smiled. “That’s a saying that means she has a lot of pretty clothes.”

“Oh. When is Daddy going to get here?”

“Any minute. Go make sure you have all your toys.”

She looked at her reflection one more time and turned to the kitchen to pack up a bag of sandwiches she’d made earlier. “You’re going to have a good time,” she muttered. “Don’t think about it,” she demanded.

“Daddy’s here!” Emily yelled, running to the door when the bell chimed.

“Hold on, make sure it’s him,” Edie said as Emily worked on the locks.

“It’s him. I saw his truck,” she said, finally pulling open the door. “Hey Daddy!”

“Hey, Sugar Bear.” He picked her up, kissing her cheek. He smiled as Edie walked down the hall, his eyes running up and down her body appreciatively. “Good morning. Y’all look great.”

“We match.” Emily wriggled to get out of his arms.

“I see that,” he said, setting her down.

“Aunt Gina picked them out for us. She’s a clothes horse,” Emily said, running to her room and returning with a beach bag loaded down with Barbie dolls and other toys. “She’s not really a horse; horses are big and Aunt Gina is skinny, but that means she likes clothes a lot.”

“Let me get the sandwiches,” Edie said, turning back toward the kitchen.

“We probably don’t need them. Mom packed us a feast when I told her we were all going to the lake together.” He stepped inside, shut the door, and followed her down the hall.

“Well, I’ll guess I’ll put them back in the fridge. You look pretty good considering you were at a bachelor party last night. Hung over?” she asked.

“Nah, I left those guys in the strip club about midnight. I had no desire to watch that white-headed woman dancing on stage when I had my two little brunettes on my mind.”

Destiny, Edie thought, freezing in the act of sliding the sandwiches back in the refrigerator. Richard’s getting closer. Don’t think about it! So he saw Destiny at the strip club; that’s where she works. It doesn’t mean anything. She turned and smiled. “Thank you for the flowers. They’re beautiful.”

“I’m glad you like them, I picked them out myself, instead of getting the ready made ones,” he said proudly.

“You did a good job; definitely had the landscapers eye, and they look great in front of the mirror in the hall.”

“I noticed. So I was thinking,” he lowered his voice, “that I could stay over, and in the morning pretend I just got here.
